8 Ball Rack
Musical Style: Rock/Pop

8 Ball rack is a defunct band that is here because I find it to be a significant progression of the individuals who made up the band. This was a band in 2001 and was comprised of Cathryn Beeks, Matt Silvia, Clint Welch, Drew Duff and Dave French. I really don't know many of the dynamics of the band. I received this CD by accident and it sat on my desk for over a month, unopened and unlistened to. I had no idea who they were? When I finally opened it up I was shocked because I kept hearing Cathryn's voice and Matt's guitar. So I looked at the liner notes and sure enough my ear was right. Now I listen to the CD as one of my favorites.

Astra Kelly
Musical Style: Rock/Folk Rock/Powerpop

Astra Kelly immediately took me by storm. The first time i heard her sing I was mesmerized and she immediately went to my top five female singer/songwriters in town. Her day job (or at least the only one I know about) is her Saturday radio show where she plays local San Diego musicians on KPRI 102.1 a local radio station here in San Diego. Astra has a natural and beautiful voice and very melodic but solid song writing abilities. My favorite song is "Shotgun Mama" which she also sings with one of her other affiliations. A band with Cathryn Beeks, Marcia Claire and Bernadette Gallegos called "Not Your Mom". Astra has one Demo CD, I don't know if she has plans for an upcoming CD but she is very busy with her radio shows, Appearances and the Listen Local SD Showcase she host's at Dublin's Pub in the Gaslamp Quarter.

Anna Troy
Musical Style: Blues

Anna Troy is a very talented young lady. She started off early learning piano, her parents friends with Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead. At roughly 12 she learned guitar and played many coffee houses in San Diego as a duo with her sister Lindsey Troy. They got a Demo deal with Warner Bros Records. The duo was called The Troy's and were gaining in popularity, yet still they were barely in High School. They went on tour but at the same time the record industry changed. In 2003 they left the label and went their own ways following solo careers. Today Anna continues to grow and write her own music in the San Diego Music Scene. She has been billed as a headliner but is not afraid to open a show for others. She is a very versatile musician playing several instruments and her day job is teaching guitar. She has four albums on her own.
Titles: Ain't No Man, Ain't Too Young, Dollhouse, Is This Fate.

Audrey Surface
Musical Style: Jazz/Pop

Audrey Surface is another powerful voice in San Diego. The first time I heard her was at Cathryn Beeks CD release party and she was singing with Steph Johnson. She sings with Steph once in a while and sometimes with others. I once told her she should sing more often and on her own with her own band. She does do this once in a while but not enough in my humble opinion. She's that good and should be doing it more often.

Bad Science Fiction
Musical Style: Rock/Psychedelic/Ambient

Bad Science Fiction is an ongoing project by Chuck Schiele to showcase some different songs that won't fit in with his band The Grams. It was also an opportunity to work with some of his favorite friends on a project. Band members include: Chuck Schiele, Michael Head, Simeon Flick, Rob Garbo and Anilh Ramashwar. If you go to the MySpace site you can hear 3 tunes from the band. My favorite is "Rise Up". Other titles are "Voodoo" and "Judas".

Barbara Nesbitt Band
Musical Style: Rock/Country/Folk/Pop

Barbara Nesbitt is the power behind this band. Barbara's songwriting talents are only surpassed by her beautiful voice. The rest of the band is comprised of members from other bands. Mike Spurgat (Deadline Friday/Citizen Band), Bill Coomes (Deadline Friday) and Marcia Claire (Citizen Band, Cindy Lee Berryhill) each one of these members are talents to behold. But the focus is on Barbara and her musical talents. All the rest of the band do wonderful vocals and melodies backing up Barbara's powerful voice. When they are all together it makes a full rich sound that exemplifies what a good band should be! Barbara is my favorite singer in town. No Contest! I could name several of her songs here but they are all my favorites, but my new favorites will be on her new CD. Her new CD will be coming out soon! Buy it you won't be sorry!

Berkley Hart
Musical Style: Folk Rock/Acoustic/Folk

Berkley Hart is comprised of Jeff Berkley and Calman Hart. Jeff Berkley is also the main power behind Citizen Band. But his mellower songs are with his partner in crime Calman Hart. Jeff Berkley a supreme talent also has a keen wit and has been known to do comedic stories and one liners between songs. As a duo these guys shine both as very good songwriters and it is an equal partnership in creating the bands songs and sound. They have a strong following of fans and they have toured many times. The guys released a CD in March of 2006 called "Pocket Change" but my favorite album is "Something To Fall Back On". Other CD's Include Wreck 'N Sow and "Twelve"

Bernadette Gallegos
Member Of: Not Your Mom

All I know about Bernadette is she is a hell of a drummer and that she is in the band "Not Your Mom" comprised of Astra Kelly, Cathryn Beeks, Marcia Claire and Bernadette. I have partied with her and her boyfriend but I really don't know much about her except she and her boyfriend Greg are really nice people! Two of the cool people in the San Diego Music Scene!

Big Toe
Musical Style: Rock/Other/Rock

Big Toe is a three piece band that plays rock. They are a great band and one member of the band shows that having a disability is no reason to sit back and do nothing. His name is Mark Goffeney, he has had a disability since an early age and decided to pick an instrument he could play with his feet. He chose a guitar which is laid at his feet and this is how he plays for the band! Mark is an inspiration to his band mates and to everyone who ever sees them play. If you get a chance to see them play your in for a real treat. Mark also does the lead vocals for the band.

Bill Coomes
Member Of: Deadline Friday, The Barbara Nesbitt Band, The Grams

Bill Coomes is one of the Best Drummers in town. but his best claim to fame is his vocal talents. He is the lead vocalist for Deadline Friday and does backup vocals in the Barbara Nesbitt Band and The Grams (current version. It has always been a curiosity of mine how drummers (even if they are really fit like Bill) who sing ever have the breathe left to use their voice. Drummers make it look easy but check one out after a show and you will see them sweating and breathing heavy for a short while afterwards. Also another question I have is: do drummers ever feel claustrophobic being surrounded by stacks of equipment the wall behind? they must sometimes feel like they don't have enough room to swing their sticks around to play!

Billy Fritz
Member Of: The Coyote Problem

Billy Fritz is one of my oldest friends in the San Diego Music Scene! We have a common bond of being the same age and being born on the same day, both of Scandinavian descent and there are a few other weird coincidences between us. We got along so well at one time he offered to teach me bass so he could take back up the guitar and we would become a band. I even came up with a dumb name for us called "Scandinavian Zen". At one time Billy told me he was in 7 or eight bands. But eventually it caught up to him and he had to cut down. finances were also becoming a concern so he paired down to one band and is now driving a cab here in San Diego. Who knows someday you may get picked up by him. He is still an active member of Peter Bolland's Band "The Coyote Problem. I first met him as a member of Chelsea Flor's band "The Dreamstalkers" and we have been close friends ever since. I just found out he has become engaged for the first time in his life and I hope to be invited to his Wedding!

Billy Watson & His International Silver String Submarine Band
Musical Style: Blues/ Jazz/Comedy

Billy Watson is a madman his shows are so fun and he has so much energy its infectious. Even if you are not a blues fan (I know I am) you will be up out of your seat and dancing around to music and antics. A supremely accomplished harmonica player. His band is very good at what they do. I don't often get to see many of his shows because they tend to be in North County. But when he gets down this way I try to see him play! I have seen him play with Anna Troy and other blues greats in town but he is most fun when with his own band. If you go to one of his shows you will remember it!

Brenda Panneton
Musical Style: Acoustic/Folk/Indie

Brenda Panneton has a wonderful voice and is another person in the San Diego Music Scene that shares my birthday. Now I am sure she is not as old as me but we still share a birthday. Which means She , Billy and me have to have some kind of party this year for our birthdays. Brenda is fairly new to San Diego only being here a few years and in that time she has found a calling. She picked up and with the help of friends learned the guitar and starting writing songs. Good songs! She has a beautiful voice but her songs tend to be on the moody or sad side, but they are so good and well crafted songs and she has such a wonderful voice you don't get sad listening to them. Her day job is being a teacher but her new passion is her music. She just had her first CD release in April 2007. Pick up one of her CD's and find out why she is considered to be one of the best songwriters in North County! Buy Brenda Panneton: An Emotional Woman

Brooklyn
Musical Style: Acoustic/Folk Rock/Pop

Brooklyn is just starting out here in San Diego. She is currently working on her first CD with Kitchen Sync Productions. For the last year or so she has been doing gigs at restaurants and coffee houses and a few bars. She has such a beautiful voice. I once wrote this about her: "Brooklyn's voice quavers softly then ignites with a quiet fire roaring with soulful power. Her songs are well written and insightful. I can only expect to hear more good things from this young lady in the future."
Favorite Songs include: Changed My Mind, Clipped Wing, Carnival.

Butterface
Musical Style: Indie/Powerpop/Alternative

Butterface is a great Band so far as I know? But they don't play that often. I first saw them at a acoustical event at Cosmos Cafe in La Mesa where the band is based. They had never done an acoustical set before being primarily a rock band fully plugged in! Their set was so good the crowd loved it and seemed to like them better than some of the other regular acoustic act that were playing there as well. I don't know what they sound like plugged up but they must be a great sounding band I can't imagine anything else! they look like they are beginning to start playing around town again so check out the gigs in the Shows On The Near Horizon Section!

Cape May
Musical Style: Indie/Garage/Classic Rock

Cape May is not a band I don't know much about? The first time I heard them I thought they were pretty good. It was just before the San Diego Music Awards and they were playing at Winston's and asking people to vote for them for the award they were nominated in! The next time I saw them one of the band members was handing out free CD's at Farmer's Market in OB. I took the CD home and tried to play it and apparently the whole batch was botched and nothing was able to play on the CD. I emailed them but got no response. But they are a pretty good band but I have not seen them perform around San Diego in a long time.

Carlos Olmeda
Musical Style: Acoustic/Folk Rock/Alternative

Carlos Olmeda is a supremely accomplished musician and singer/songwriter. And a damn nice guy! His songs are witty and fun sometimes and yet he can sing with such soul pouring out. Very melodic and soft sometimes his songs make you feel good inside. His sense of humor gets out once in a while even when he plays with his sometimes band. The tagline he sported was "Supermice, We're supernice!" I have yet to pick up one of Carlos CD's even though I want one really bad! I think that if I found a really nice woman I would like to be intimate with, I would probably put a Carlos Olmeda CD in the player to get things in the right romantic mood.

Laura Kuebel
Musical Style: Acoustic/Folk Rock/Indie

Laura Kuebel is a wonderful singer/songwriter who frequents many coffee houses and bars to sing with a great…soft yet, strong voice that makes you feel comfortable and makes you think about her lyrics. Many songs seem sad about the tribulations of young women of today. Laura also occasionally hosts for The Brass Rail and other venues around town.
Favorite Song by Laura is: Nowhere
