Back IssueMyWeek in Music-A Fan’s Perspective! Michael Tiernan at the Spotlight Loungeby Scott Zensen

This Picture of Michael Tiernan was from Gregory Page's house Concert back in March.
I use this picture because I didn't have a camera with me when I went to see Michael Tiernan at the Spotlight Lounge at 2223 El Cajon Blvd. There at the Lafayette Hotel & Suites in University Heights, San Diego on Thursday April, 06 2006. This was the first time Michael Tiernan or anyone has played in the Lounge since it is newly renovated and under newer management. The Spotlight Lounge just started with having Live music and on Thursdays Michael will be playing there each evening between 8:00-10:00 p.m. There is no cover and children under age can listen, up till 10pm (as long as they do not sit at the bar) the Lounge will have 2 for $5 Margarita's / Nightly specials on Beer / and it is also $2 Taco night! There is a fresh salsa bar also that’s hard to beat. And if you don’t drink its $2.50 for soda with refills.
The Lounge has a jukebox a bar and a pool table and is off the main entrance to the Hotel and close to the pool. The ambiance is light and airy with maroon colored walls and black tables. The table clothes are black as well and tea lights are on every table. Finally the bar island is in the center of the room and to make it feel airy there are white French doors all around. There is plenty of seating inside and out and when summer comes along I am sure Michael or whoever will be playing will probably move it to the outside. Soon the Lounge will be having a private show with Michael for their Grand Opening later this month.
Michael was in great form since this was his first performance there the word isn’t quite out yet so it ended up being an intimate evening. His Aunt was present, me and my friend Gina and a few others showed up, later many from the hotel gravitated to the lounge to listen to Michael’s great guitar work and wonderful voice and witty thought provoking songs that he has written himself. I have seen Michael perform at two other venues and knew I would enjoy the show but was pleasantly surprised to find he has quite a sense of humor. He was very relaxed as he played many of my favorite songs of his like these from his:
“Jumping In” CD:
1. Swim
2. Slow Down
3. Child On Your Floor
4. Song I Can't Remember
5. Born Again Contradiction
6. Don't Hold On
7. This One, Not That One
8. Plasticity
9. Pass On By
10.The Day I Tried to Live
11. Jumping In
12. The Other Side of the World
Or his “Still Listening” CD
1. The Other Side
2. Drive
3. The Great Unknown
4. The Track entire song!
5. Bullet Train
6. My Own Two Legs
7. Unplug
8. Ego
9. West Coast Life
10. Better
11. Knowing You
12. World of Gold
13. Lifeless
14. Teaching Me
Michael also did a couple of new songs for us that he is still working on! Michael also put his time into promoting local acoustic talents by organizing acoustic showcases of his friends here in San Diego and he calls it the New Acoustic Generation! One of those friends stopped by and Michael coaxed him into playing a set for everyone. His name is Simeon Flick you can find out more about him here on MySpace. I was really impressed with his songwriting and Singing ability and his Guitar work is amazing as well! The songs he played were:
Money Don't Make The Man
Ingenue
Can't Wait 'til I Die
I was especially impressed with “Money Don’t Make the Man”. The lyrics just seemed to call to me, since anyone who knows me knows I don’t always have a lot of money but when I do I am generous. Simeon has told me that he will be playing there at the lounge on another night of the week, so I will be looking forward to that as well as Thursday’s with Michael Tiernan. If you get a chance come see the shows here at the Spotlight Lounge. They have great food and drinks and now Great music! Support your local musicians. They will have their CD’s for sale and other merchandise sometimes, so come check them out and enjoy yourself in the process. I’m Out!
Ciao
